Prehistoric Traces in Surrey (UK) III

This study indicates that most probably Tumble Beacon in Banstead was erected on a prehistoric motte. It also shows that some tumuli were likely constructed on older "important places". And again it underlines the importance of moats and ancient churches.
Already in Prehistoric Traces in Surrey (UK) I we pointed out that the church in Oxted is equidistant from the church in Bletchingley and from the moat Crowhurst Place. The same distance (6.60 km, always measured horizontally) is found again between the moat Crowhurst Place and a tumulus ("tumulus Godstone North") in Godstone (534.820/151.845).
The moat Lodge Farm/Bletchingley is then equidistant (4.85 km) from this tumulus and from the moat Crowhurst Place.
The straight line  moat Crowhurst Place  -  moat Lodge Farm  leads exactly to the church St.Martin in Dorking; Lodge Farm moat is equidistant (17.38 km) from this church and from the church in Capel.
The distance between this church and St.Martin in Dorking (8.73 km) is found again between the Capel church and the church St.John in Wotton, and a third time between the Wotton church and a (lonely) tumulus in the Leatherhead Downs (518.205/154.690).
The church in Mickleham is an interesting and fairly rare case: it seems to have been erected some twenty meters to the North of its likely "prehistoric predecessor" which was exactly in line between St.John in Wotton and the tumulus in the Leatherhead Downs, and is together with this tumulus exactly equidistant (8.91 km) from the church St.Andrews in Cobham..
The same distance is found another three times between the tumulus Leatherhead Downs and the church St.Mary in Reigate, between this church and Tunble Beacon/Banstead and between Tumble Beacon and the moat The Mounts in Leatherhead!
The Betchworth church is then equidistant (9.81 km) from Tumble Beacon and the moat The Mounts, with the same distance once more between Betchworth church and the church St.Margareth in Hooley. The straight line  Tumble Beacon  -  Hooley church  leads exactly to the church in Godstone.
One should mention that Tumble Beacon is also equidistant (9.92 km) from the Fetcham Church and St.Lawrence in Caterham (not indicated in this graph).
